Olympic

 When Persians invaded Greece a lot of the Greek city states agreed that they would put together an army but they had a hard time getting one together because so many people wanted to go to the olympics so they delayed putting an army together to defend the country from the Persians.


The Olympics started in 776 BC.They went for 1000 years during which 293 Olympic games were held. 

In 393 AD the new Roman emperor banned the Olympic games as he was a Christian and believed they were a pagan practise. It took 1503 years for the Olympics to return. The first modern Olympics were held in Athen in 1896. 

206 countries competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with over 11,000 athletes.


In the ancient Olympics games there was running, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing, pankration and equestrian events.


The Olympics were created in honor of ancient Greece’s most famous god. Zeus, the king of gods.


Funny fact: in the ancient Olympics the participants competed naked.

In fact the Greek word for nude is gymnos, which is where the word gymnastics comes from.


Instead of getting gold, silver and bronze there was only one winner who was rewarded with a wreath which is an olive leaf crown.
